How can homecare staff help people manage medicines at home? 21/10/2016

New draft guidelines have been issued by NICE which set out how homecare staff can help adults who are receiving social care support at home manage their medicines safely and correctly. The draft guidelines:

  • Suggest staff should discuss individual's needs and preferences and record decisions about the support needed in the personal homecare plan.
  • Adopt the view that staff should encourage people to take direct responsibility for their own medicines wherever possible, with help from family or carers if needed.
  • Outline how to approach helping people who need support and deals with issues such as ordering prescriptions, administering medicines and what records to take.

The draft guideline is open for consultation until 11 November. To comment, you will first need to register as a stakeholder. More at: UKHCA will be commenting on behalf of members. To send us your views, email by 2 November. NICE news item.
