UKHCA responds to Low Pay Commission's call for evidence on effect of minimum wage rises 06/07/2017

The Low Pay Commission (LPC) has carried out a call for evidence of the impact of recent increases to the National Minimum Wage (which includes the National Living Wage) to inform thinking about future upratings. The details of the evidence LPC looked for are set out in the consultation dated April 2017, which closed on 7 July 2017. Thank you to UKHCA members who completed our survey, which provided us with much valuable evidence to use in our response.

We have now sent our submission to the Low Pay Commission, explaining that increases in NMW are not the issue per se for homecare employers, who want to make sure their staff are properly rewarded for the demanding and difficult work they do. The issue is local authorities failing to match the increases, leaving employers to try and fill the gap. We explained to the Commission that a key measure is the amount of contracts being handed back to local authorities. With the homecare market being so fragile, there must be no doubt about the crisis facing the sector, and the impact on the older and vulnerable people it serves.
