UKHCA responds to CQC on corporate level interviews - 01/06/2016

In an interview with Local Government Chronicle today, CQC's Chief Inspector for Adult Social Care, Andrea Sutcliffe, talked about the possibility of undertaking a corporate level interview of larger provider organisations, similar to a Registered Manager interview at branch level.

Andrea Sutcliffe said:

“Culture is the hallmark of a good service, but sadly we also see examples of circumstances where families and carers are seen as kind of irritants not to be listened to.”

“That is absolutely not what we would want to see, so we would want to be challenging at a corporate level if that seems to be the case.”

UKHCA's Policy Director, Colin Angel, made the following comment for publication, at the request of the Local Government Chronicle:

"Good leadership plays a pivotal role in effective social care. Corporate providers would welcome organisation-level assessment of their services, particularly as CQC have also announced their intention to reduce the frequency of inspections of 'good' and 'outstanding' locations.

"A head-office level assessment could also improve the consistency CQC's judgements at local level, while reducing duplication.

"We are pleased that Andrea has confirmed that such a process should be designed with providers and we look forward to discussing this with her. For such assessments to be successful CQC will need to train and deploy inspectors sufficiently skilled to assess multi-site organisations, not just individual services."
