UKHCA Media Release

Nine in ten MPs surveyed say care system not suitable - 31/08/2017

In a report out today (31 August 2017), Independent Age has revealed that nine out of ten MPs in England agree the current social care system is not adequate for the UK’s ageing population.

The survey, drawn from the responses of 101 England MPs this summer, also found that 86% agreed a cross-party consensus is needed for a lasting settlement on health and social care.

The news comes as Government considers the next steps for further consultation on social care funding and sustainability, mentioned in the Queen’s Speech and the Conservative Party’s 2017 election manifesto.

UKHCA Chief Executive, Bridget Warr CBE, stated,

“We are encouraged by this recognition of the UK’s social care crisis. At last, we see that what UKHCA and others across the sector have been saying appears to be being heard by MPs in England.

Given today’s report, we call on Theresa May and her Government to work earnestly to speed up the planned consultation and create a feasible and sustainable cross-party solution that meets the needs of an ageing population.

The UK is not getting any younger; now is the time for us to create a suitable social care system."
