Local Government Finance Settlement 2019/20Local Government Finance Settlement 2019/20

In a written ministerial statement, the Government has announced the annual local government finance settlement for local authorities in England for 2019/20. It includes £56.5 million across 2018/19 and 2019/20 to help councils prepare for EU Exit. The improved Better Care Fund will increase to £1.8 billion in 2019/20.

On Adult and Children's Social Care, the statement confirms additional funding for social care previously announced by the Chancellor in the 2018 Autumn Statement. That includes £240 million in both 2018/19 and 2019/20 to support adult social care services in reducing pressures on the NHS, and an additional £410 million Social Care Support Grant for local authorities to support adult and children's social care services. These resources will be distributed according to the existing Adult Social Care Relative Needs Formula.

Councils who increased council tax by up to 3% in 2017/18 and 2018/19 to help pay forsocial care, (the social care precept) cannot charge the precept again in 2019/20.
