Depleted reserves highlight pressures on councils in EnglandDepleted reserves highlight pressures on councils in England

BBC research ahead of the Panorama programme on the "Crisis in Care", due to be screened on 29 May and 5 June, has found that 11 councils in England would have "fully exhausted" their reserves within 4 years unless they topped them up (according to analysis by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) Councils with the biggest drop in reserves over 2015-2018 were Northamptonshire, Somerset and Rotherham. Pressures on funding include rising demand for adult social care and stretched children's services.

BBC analysis with the Health Foundation shows that public spending on care for the elderly and disabled is much higher in Scotland and Wales than England: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-48438132
