MPs criticise lack of readiness for pandemic and impact on social careMPs criticise lack of readiness for pandemic and impact on social care

The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee has issued a report critical of the Government's early handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in England. In particular MPs were concerned about the lack of planning, frequently changing guidance, inadequate stocks of PPE and the availability of testing. The discharge of patients without testing to care homes is highlighted, together with the need to fund, and reform, the social care system generally.

UKHCA's CEO, Dr Jane Townson, said: "There are many lessons that the government must learn, not least giving adult social care equal support to the NHS and considering them as two parts of a single system, adequately funded and with clear accountability arrangements."
