More childless older people may mean greater demand for paid-for careMore childless older people may mean greater demand for paid-for care

Figures from the Office for National Statistics suggest that, in the future, there will be more older people and a higher proportion of those will be childless in England and Wales.

Women born in the peak of the 1960s baby boom (currently aged in their mid-50s) are twice as likely not to have had children as women born post-WW2 (currently aged in their mid-70s).

Because adult children are the most common providers of informal social care to their parents at older ages, this is likely to increase the demand for paid-for care.
