UKHCA's reaction to the Queen's SpeechUKHCA's reaction to the Queen's Speech

Today’s Queen’s Speech (11 May 2021), announced that measures to reform social care in England will be brought forward in this Parliament.

UKHCA’s review of Government’s proposals is that nothing of substance has been proposed and commentary suggests that government is limiting its focus to protecting inheritances from costs of institutional care.

If true, this misses the point.

We all want to live well at home and flourish in our communities.

As a key part of the “levelling up” agenda, we call on the government to address unmet need for support and care at home, particularly in more deprived areas, which Age UK estimates to affect over 1.5 million people.

Solely investing heavily in the NHS to support people who could have been helped at home is wasteful of public money, bad for individuals and fails to address root causes of ill-health.

UKHCA’s Chief Executive, Jane Townson, said:

“We call on Government to grasp three crucial objectives:

“(1) Put people receiving services at the heart of the debate, empowering them to direct their own support and care, ensuring effective collaboration across Integrated Care Systems and investing in innovation and technology;

“(2) Invest in our care workforce, so the work is rewarded fairly and helps to fuel employment and economic growth; and

“(3) Clarify the responsibility of State and citizen in meeting care costs, helping us all to plan for the future.”
