    First Page of Document

Available to UKHCA members only. Information on how to join UKHCA.

Our factsheet for members on smoking and homecare outlines the main smoking ban provisions across the UK, considers the issues that arise when service users smoke at home and looks at steps to achieving a smoke-free environment for employees. Our factsheet supplements existing guidance with hints on negotiating with users who are reluctant to refrain from smoking and other practical steps to help employers fulfil their obligations to maintain the health of their homecare workers. Produced in 2009 and revised in March 2019.

UKHCA Guidance: Controlling Scalding Risks from Bathing and Showering

    Front cover of document

Care workers work in people's homes where they are unable to control the physical environment, making health and safety a challenge. This is particularly true when it comes to helping service users bath and shower in their own homes. Our guidance considers good practice and what providers can do to control scalding risks to service users when care packages include help with bathing and showering. This includes careful risk assessment, staff training, well–drafted and implemented policies and procedures, and the use of equipment, such as thermometers, where appropriate. Updated in August 2016 to reflect current HSE guidance.
